Sound and Silence: An Exhibition of Contemporary Bells
📍 MAKE Southwest, Bovey Tracey
🗓️ 22 March – 14 June 2025
This week a new exhibition entitled Sound and Silence will open at MAKE Southwest. The show is billed as an exhibition of contemporary bells and will present the work of four contemporary sculptors and bellmakers working with bells in diverse, idiosyncractic ways.
Artist and researcher Emma-Kate Matthews exhibits new sculptural works from her Resonant Bodies series. These works feature bell-like and pronged physical instruments that explore notions of resonance, in both acoustic and cultural contexts. Matthews’ bells have been produced through digital modelling and contemporary fabrication processes (such as 3D printing) as opposed to traditional bell foundry techniques.
Sculptor, musician, and bellmaker Marcus Vergette will present three interactive installations at the exhibition, all of which can be activated by visitors. All of the works feature bells in a range of materials, including a collection of unconventional bells made of plaster.
Bristol-based artists Isaac Stacey and Sonny Lee Lightfoot AKA Copper Sounds, will present a new sound installation for the exhibition. The installation will build upon the duo’s prior work which often combines elemental materials with responsive technologies, and will feature a set of unique bronze bells which will be resonated by mechanical means.
David Snoo Wilson is a sculptor and bellmaker whose work explores histories and folklore of bell-making in the British Isles. Wilson runs Ore and Ingot, a nomadic bell foundry. At this exhibition Wilson will present a variety of his hand-forged bells that can be sounded by visitors.
Sound and Silence opens on 22nd March and runs until 14th June 2025 at MAKE Southwest in Bovey Tracey, Devon.

Lizzie King – Connecting the Tree and the Foot
Fragments of Time
📍 Salford Museum & Art Gallery, Salford
🗓️ 22 March – 21 Dec 2025
Opening this week in the East Wing of the Salford Museum & Art Gallery is Fragments of Time, a group exhibition of works by four North West based artists Naomi Kendrick, Lizzie King, Maggie Thompson, and Susan Wright.
The work of interdisciplinary artist Lizzie King often approaches the means of sonic and visual production through an ecological lens. Recent work has seen King explore human and more-than-human relations in public spaces through recording the vibrations of trees, and using amplified sound to produce alternative photographic images. For Fragments of Time, King presents Connecting the Tree and the Foot, a new four-channel sound installation that responds to the physical and acoustic qualities of the gallery itself – a former dance studio with sprung flooring. The work references the materiality of the space, as well as its history of utilising and mitigating vibration.
The Fragments of Time exhibition opens at Salford Museum & Art Gallery on Saturday 22nd March and runs until 21 December 2025. A launch event will be held at 13.00–15.00 on Sunday 23rd March.

The Conch: Camille Brée, Seo Hye Lee & Mengting Zhuo
📍 South London Gallery, London
🗓️ 19 March 2025, 19.00–20.30
South London Gallery’s long-running event series The Conch returns this week with an evening dedicated to sound and its impact on the body. On Wednesday 19th March, international artists Camille Brée, Mengting Zhuo, and Seo Hye Lee will all present new works that will respond to the gallery’s Clore Studio space through performative gestures, sonic actions, and various media and materials.
Sound is a key factor in the work of London-based Chinese artist Mengting Zhuo, whose creates intimate environments for audiences through a combination of live performance and installation. At The Conch event Zhuo will present a site-responsive performance-lecture, where the acoustic properties of the space will be activated through amplified voice and objects.
Attempting to recontextualise definitions of ‘soundscape’ South Korean artist Seo Hye Lee will present a selection of textile works responding to sonic phenomena and sensation. Lee’s practice approaches sound and silence from a position of hearing loss, informed by the artist’s experience as a cochlear implant user.
Experience The Conch at South London Gallery’s Clore Studio on 19th March 2025.
