The School of Wild Listening: SOA - Um Filme de Raquel Castro
📍 Unit 44, Dublin
🗓️ 06 Feb 2025
Dublin’s School of Wild Listening hosts a screening of SOA, the feature-length documentary by Portuguese sound researcher/director/curator Raquel Castro. The film explores the soundscape and details encounters with the sounds of daily life. SOA features a host of international sound artists and field recordists such as Chris Watson, David Toop, Hildegard Westerkamp, Leah Barclay and Peter Cusack.
“We are surrounded by all kinds of sounds, but how far are we conscious about them? The director and investigator Raquel Castro has been working with the concept of sound landscape. And in particular the way sounds, silences, noises, frequencies and all spectral densities - infra or ultrasounds - can shape each place and all of us. This is also a film essay about citizenship, ecology, and the responsibility we have for the sounds we produce.” – Raquel Castro
The screening of SOA takes place at Unit 44, Dublin on 6th February 2025.

SOIL. The World at Our Feet
📍 Somerset House, London
🗓️ 23 January – 13 April 2025
SOIL. The World at Our Feet, Somerset House’s current exhibition in their Embankment Galleries brings its focus to the ground and the life beneath us. The show features a huge line-up of international artists and researchers, with many works examining the soil from a sonic perspective.
Artist Miranda Whall presents visual and sonic works from her When Earth Speaks project which utilises soil sensor data in a manner of performative and representational ways; whilst Marshmellow Laser Feast’s Fly Agaric I installation explores the hidden rhyhtms of the soil through pulsating mushrooms and narration from mycologist/author Merlin Sheldrake.
Also on display at Somerset House is the collaborative work between micro-photographer Wim van Egmond and sound artist Michael Prime, who have produced the installation Soil in Action, which features microscopic time-lapse footage alongside amplified sounds of microbial life beneath the soil.
“Uncovering the hidden depths of soil through specially commissioned work, is Dutch artist Wim van Egmond, whose practice combines art with modern digital techniques, and who regularly collaborates with scientists. Presented in the magnificent double-height space of the exhibition, this installation is in collaboration with musician Michael Prime, who has recorded the sounds of the microbial life in soil. This work will take audiences deep into the dynamic and dramatic underworld, making the invisible visible through spectacular sound and micro-photography. “ – Somerset House
SOIL. The World at Our Feet runs at Somerset House until 13th April 2025.

Jayne Dent – The Dazzling Far-Near
📍 36 Gallery, Newcastle
🗓️ 07 – 16 Feb 2025
Newcastle’s 36 Gallery presents The Dazzling Far-Near, a new exhibition by artist-composer Jayne Dent. The show debuts a new interactive audiovisual installation exploring ideas of intimacy, sacred folk traditions, forging connections between technological mediation and transcendental experience. The installation is a result of the artist’s recent research and development of touch-responsive e-textiles. Visitors can activate and control the sonic composition by interacting with the tactile fabric elements.
“How do you commune with the invisible? Where do you meet? Shapes of sanctuary blueprints and open doors, this visible, divisible light. Mirrors to step through, reflections and shadows, eyes closed, hands clasped, a spiritual experience. A ladder to climb, a call and response, turning inward and reaching out. Getting lost in mapping and making and remembering. Open the songbook at any page and sing: voices synchronised, sit together in dazzling light.” – Jayne Dent
The Dazzling Far-Near has its exhibition preview on Friday 7th February at Newcastle’s 36 Gallery, continuing until 16th February 2025 (Sat–Sun only).
